Gaza loses, Gully rises victorious

I was thinking on the bus, coming into work today how Jamaican music superstars, Vybz Kartel and Mavado have taken their different paths, just from their different outlooks on life.

This seems obvious to me if you listen to both of their latest songs ..

So with Kartel facing murder charges and things looking generally hopeless for him, he comes out with Ghetto Road

So he came from a place which was difficult and he’s faced a lot of hardship, if you re-read some of my previous posts, you will see that I am a real Kartel fan and have given him a lot of understanding, but he has let life really get to him.

Whereas, I think that Mavado is really rising above it all and OK, he comes from the same Kingston streets, but he’s using his new situation to enjoy life.

I actually rate Kartel for being more real in a way but when it comes to survival in this life,  he maybe has something to learn from the Gully God.

Kartel’s Klub in Kingston is no more

L-R Corey Todd - business partner to Kartel and on the right is the Govt information minister Daryl Vaz

I was talking to a friend today who was telling me about Kartel’s club in New Kingston called “The Building” and how he’s got his fingers in all these pies – well, it turns out that he’s been cut out.

After disagreements with his business partner, Corey Todd after alleged threats to Todd’s life, the club was closed for a couple of weeks and is reopening on July 1st.  It will be changing its name to Club Riddim without Kartel.  Read more and line ups here

I found this photo of Kartel with the govt Information Minister Daryl Vaz which seems pretty odd to me.

So what are people thinking about kartel nowadays?  Everyone i talk to is saying how he’s losing his way and casting Jamaica in his own freaky image.

Certainly, losing his business partner would not be a great move in building the Gaza Empire.

And this shocking statement by Todd is really signalling where Kartel is at nowadays.  In it Todd is reported to say that if anything happens to me, then you know where to look.

It adds to the rumours of violence circulating around the dancehall star. This is such a shame as he used to be lovely.

Here is Corey Todd talking about the end of this business relationship.

The new style, longer so he can play with it …

Kartel and Cake Soap

What is the man doing?

Here’s the photo doing the rounds on the internet – Kartel looking so handsome in the good old days with the glowing skin and the after photo – after the skin bleaching.  Comments I received on facebook included, “idiot” and “he now looks like a monster”.   I think it’s just so sad and tells me that the guy is seriously losing his way.  This is not what someone who loves and respects themselves does.

I actually really like the song though, been listening to that alot and also the counteraction song, has a good vibe to it.

He talks about it in this video – forward to 3’23

Released without charge – Vybz Kartel

After two weeks in police lock-up, the dancehall DJ Vybz Kartel was released without charge on Friday July 16th.  Now there are reports that he is going to sue the authorities for loss of earnings.

His lawyer, Valerie Neita Robertson (it was Chris Tavares – Finson before) is quoted as saying that the National Security Minister signed a release warrant for him on July 13th.  So it seems odd that the police held him for 3 days on top of that. This is a good article which explains some of the background to the gang affiliations in the area of Portmore where Kartel was brought up.

Kartel was held under the state of emergency powers, but it was never clear what he was even being held for.  He gave himself in, when he heard he was wanted for questioning.

Now he’s been released, it does not look good any way you look at it.  In terms of the justice system, human rights, detention powers, use or mis-use of emergency powers.  If this can happen to someone as high profile as Kartel,  just think how ordinary people  are being treated, with no-one ever getting to hear about it.

Kartel questioned by the police

So Vybz Kartel has been in a police cell now for nearly a week and set to stay there for another month.  From what I can see, it’s over gang activities in the Portmore area where he’s from.

Recently when I was in JA, I bumped into these guys who film music videos and they were really hating on Kartel big time.  It seemed to be more of an issue for them since the death of Oneil from Voicemail. As I have said on this blog before, I have seen the links between dancehall artists and gangs before, but Kartel and his camp are the subject of a lot of rumours.  I can’t say how involved he is in this shooting or this beating.

But what I can say is, it’s hard to be a dancehall artist and not have a gun or be part of a gang which offers some protection and status.

I have been listening to this kartel track and this kartel track (clean version).

Vybz and the Bowcat

The derogatory term, “bowcat” more usually associated with men who do the licking, but also women doing the sucking.  So what do we call the person who is enjoying the actions of the bowcat?  Ding dong dog???

This is about the photos that have been doing the rounds of Vybz Kartel getting a blow job.  See the photos here.

They’re too XXX rated for this blog.

The dancehall star, who I have to admit, I love his music, been listening to this track the most and Clarkes, recently.  Vybz has been doing some pretty crazy things, his sex antics are well documented. I was talking to someone the other day about his getting his tongue pierced.

So the person I was talking to, was really hating on Kartel for having had his tongue pierced – does this indicate he’s gay? even though Kartel seems to be enjoying the role of ding dong dog?

Having interviewed the man quite a few times, I always thought he was very likeable, what I liked about him was his humour, he always makes me laugh out loud, he’s pretty clever too I reckon – definitely has the gift of the gab, a media honey.  That’s a big advantage he has over Movado, who always come across as very awkward with the media.  Kartel is a natural extrovert and loves the attention.

Anyway, the best thing someone said to me was, “If there was no Kartel, Jamaica would be a very boring place”  love him or hate him, you have to agree with that right?

Gaza Gully beef escalating?

876.com are saying that Movado’s Range Rover was shot up and that this shooting follows Kartel’s car being fire bombed – although the entertainer says it was an “electrical fault”.

It also reports that the situation on the Gully side – aka Movado’s home area of Cassava Piece in Kingston is tense right now.

Anyone got any more info on that?

I am hoping that Movado is not going the same way as Sizzla in August Town.  Read more about that in this blog post.

Gaza or Gully?

Rather than paintings of Haile Selassie on the walls in Kingston, you are more likely to see tags saying Gaza or Gully right now.

The battle going on between dancehall artist, Vybz Kartel (who’s uncompromising and tough sound from the streets gives him the Gaza tag) and Movado – the singjay, a cross between DJ and singer – better known as the Gully God because of the place he comes from in Kingston- Cassava Piece, with its’  huge gully running through it.  This photo is not Cassava Piece, but just in case you’re wondering what a gully looks like.

So Gaza or Gully?

I have said on this blog before, that I am long standing Kartel fan, but I was feeling Movado more.  But there’s been a turnaround.  Kartel is back on top.  I’m really feeling his track, Money on My Mind and even ramping shop I was liking that.   But will musical battle spill over into violence?  I don’t reckon so, but with the mix of social problems that inner city Kingston has, I can understand why some might be worried.  Are you?

UPDATE

I’m linking this video as the Gaza Gully beef, has been squashed after they performed on stage together and they had a chat with the Jamaican Prime Minister (see photo below).

Kartel win it

The dancehall clash everyone was waiting for.  Kartel vs Mavado at Sting 2008 and the overwhelming consensus is that Kartel reigns supreme over the Gully God.  It was Kartel coming out in army fatigues signalling he was serious about this war.   It threw Mavado and he starts stumbling and shouting about his microphone levels not being right when it seems he was covering up for forgetting his lyrics.

I’m not surprised as Kartel is the far more eloquent and media savvy of the two, but just because you’re good at battling, does not change the fact that the big hits of 2008 came from Mavado’s melancholic voice as opposed to Kartel’s aggressive lyrics.
