Kartel’s career from prison

Vybz Kartel is not recording any songs in prison in case you were wondering as there seems to be a few new songs circulating the airwaves.

This is the statement from his PR people.

Adidjahiem Records would like to make it clear, that Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer has not recorded any material since his arrest in 2011. Any songs containing material from Vybz Kartel that were released after his arrest, were recorded by the artist in previous years.

Various songs containing material from Vybz Kartel have surfaced since his arrest, including a collaboration with Busta Rhymes and a song titled “Back to Life,” which have sparked rumors that the artist has been recording at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre. Adidjahiem Records would like to make it explicitly clear that both songs were recorded prior to his arrest. The single “Wine and Go Down” by Busta Rhymes ft. Vybz Kartel was recorded at Donovan ‘Don Corleon’ Bennett’s studio in 2010 in a session that was broadcast live on ustream. The lyrics contained in “Back to Life” were also recorded in 2010.

“The lyrics from “Back to Life,” that was released by U.I.M. Records, were recorded by Adidjahiem Records during the Dudus extradition – the original title was “Me Waan Go Home,” says Elvis Redwood of So Unique Records, who was an in-house engineer for Adidjahiem Records at the time. “Those same lyrics were re-used on a different track to create “Back to Life.”

Gaza loses, Gully rises victorious

I was thinking on the bus, coming into work today how Jamaican music superstars, Vybz Kartel and Mavado have taken their different paths, just from their different outlooks on life.

This seems obvious to me if you listen to both of their latest songs ..

So with Kartel facing murder charges and things looking generally hopeless for him, he comes out with Ghetto Road

So he came from a place which was difficult and he’s faced a lot of hardship, if you re-read some of my previous posts, you will see that I am a real Kartel fan and have given him a lot of understanding, but he has let life really get to him.

Whereas, I think that Mavado is really rising above it all and OK, he comes from the same Kingston streets, but he’s using his new situation to enjoy life.

I actually rate Kartel for being more real in a way but when it comes to survival in this life,  he maybe has something to learn from the Gully God.

Kartel and Cake Soap

What is the man doing?

Here’s the photo doing the rounds on the internet – Kartel looking so handsome in the good old days with the glowing skin and the after photo – after the skin bleaching.  Comments I received on facebook included, “idiot” and “he now looks like a monster”.   I think it’s just so sad and tells me that the guy is seriously losing his way.  This is not what someone who loves and respects themselves does.

I actually really like the song though, been listening to that alot and also the counteraction song, has a good vibe to it.

He talks about it in this video – forward to 3’23

Vybz and the Bowcat

The derogatory term, “bowcat” more usually associated with men who do the licking, but also women doing the sucking.  So what do we call the person who is enjoying the actions of the bowcat?  Ding dong dog???

This is about the photos that have been doing the rounds of Vybz Kartel getting a blow job.  See the photos here.

They’re too XXX rated for this blog.

The dancehall star, who I have to admit, I love his music, been listening to this track the most and Clarkes, recently.  Vybz has been doing some pretty crazy things, his sex antics are well documented. I was talking to someone the other day about his getting his tongue pierced.

So the person I was talking to, was really hating on Kartel for having had his tongue pierced – does this indicate he’s gay? even though Kartel seems to be enjoying the role of ding dong dog?

Having interviewed the man quite a few times, I always thought he was very likeable, what I liked about him was his humour, he always makes me laugh out loud, he’s pretty clever too I reckon – definitely has the gift of the gab, a media honey.  That’s a big advantage he has over Movado, who always come across as very awkward with the media.  Kartel is a natural extrovert and loves the attention.

Anyway, the best thing someone said to me was, “If there was no Kartel, Jamaica would be a very boring place”  love him or hate him, you have to agree with that right?

Gaza Gully beef escalating?

876.com are saying that Movado’s Range Rover was shot up and that this shooting follows Kartel’s car being fire bombed – although the entertainer says it was an “electrical fault”.

It also reports that the situation on the Gully side – aka Movado’s home area of Cassava Piece in Kingston is tense right now.

Anyone got any more info on that?

I am hoping that Movado is not going the same way as Sizzla in August Town.  Read more about that in this blog post.

Kartel win it

The dancehall clash everyone was waiting for.  Kartel vs Mavado at Sting 2008 and the overwhelming consensus is that Kartel reigns supreme over the Gully God.  It was Kartel coming out in army fatigues signalling he was serious about this war.   It threw Mavado and he starts stumbling and shouting about his microphone levels not being right when it seems he was covering up for forgetting his lyrics.

I’m not surprised as Kartel is the far more eloquent and media savvy of the two, but just because you’re good at battling, does not change the fact that the big hits of 2008 came from Mavado’s melancholic voice as opposed to Kartel’s aggressive lyrics.

Sting is coming

stingThis is the concert that I have always wanted to go to but never have yet. Every year I’m like, wouldn’t it be great to go, but I still never have. One day, one day.

It is a legendary concert. The proper ghetto concert – not for the faint hearted. Go there expecting some shots to be fired!

It happens in Portmore every Christmas time. Run by the promoter called Leng – proper name Isaiah Laing from Supreme Promotions.

It’s the 25th concert this year and it has been launched by Portmore native, Vybz Kartel (who’s been busy promoting Ramping Shop!)

Laing of course and none other than Renato Adams. Adams is a more than controversial police man. To just get a flavour of how controversial he is take a look at some of these newspaper headlines about him – here and here.

Gosh I could write a very long post about Adams, but this is about Sting.

sting22004 I was set to go but life got in the way – that year was when Kartel bottled Ninja man in the face and there was a lot of blood.

There is always some beef between the artists that has to get hyped up – but hopefully it won’t lead to any actual violence this year. In the past, the big beef has always been between Bounty Killer and Beenie man – but them two are ready to collect their pension now!

It’s all about Kartel and Mavado nowadays.

I always loved Kartel the best – whenever I have met him and interviewed him he has made me laugh and i’ve always been blown away by his eloquence and sense of humour. I like the guy and I’ve always liked his songs.

But I don’t feel like that anymore – since Mavado, Kartel just seems like old news. Mavado is singing about Jamaica now – he’s got the sadness and the grief in his voice.  Kartel has got the bravado and cockiness and cheekiness which I think is the past. Today’s Jamaica is much more serious. Read more about this years’s Sting line up and details here.

Shaggy in a new light

I read that Shaggy is holding a concert on Jan 3rd 2009 to raise money for Jamaica’s Bustamante Children’s Hospital.  I always considered Shaggy as abit of a useless artist, so hearing this news certainly increases my estimation of him.

shaggy

There seems to be quite a lot of charity events in the reggae and dancehall world – usually some gala or other going on.

Like Richie Stephens who did this thing with BET to raise money for potential athletes in Jamaica.

Also as i said in my last post, Buju Banton has a charity supporting people with HIV.

I had a quick look arouns to see what Vybz Kartel was doing and found an article from 2007 which says he donated funds to Tredegar All-Age School.  I’m sure he probably does a bit more than that.  I wish they would publish a list like Forbes rich list which detail how much they give away as a percentage of their overall wealth and to which causes.

Of course the question probably worth asking is, what’s the point?  If the government can’t fund education, equip hospitals, maintain law and order, what can Shaggy do about it?
